Siem Reap is widely renowned as the gateway to Angkor Wat, the millennium-old temple ruins of the Khmer Empire. Set along the Siem Reap River, this small provincial capital boasts hundreds of sightseeing opportunities. This small but lively town close to the northern shore of Tonle Sap Lake has seen phenomenal growth as a tourist destination in recent years.
Exploring the temples of the Angkor Archaeological Park will almost certainly take up most of your time in Siem Reap, but the city does offer a number of other great activities to enjoy in the meantime. Chief among them are opportunities to relax and unwind after a day of exploration, with massages spas being especially popular options.
While Siem Reap is not the sort of place you would call a shopper’s paradise, it does have an extraordinary focus on small local shops and markets. The Old Market is particularly special, being practically an attraction in its own right. The city’s various cultural attractions also boast unique artisanal wares for sale as fantastic momentos.
