The peninsula of Istria in the west and the province of Dalmatia in the south are connected by  Kvarner Bay, situated on the northern Adriatic Sea. The first visitors to Opatija for summer vacations were noblemen of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in the 19th century, which is when tourism began.

The most well-known resort in Kvarner Bay is perhaps the seaside town of Crikvenica. The Mediterranean climate, gorgeous beaches, and crystal-clear sea have drawn tourists here for more than 125 years. There are many wonderful places to stay along the coast, and even some really charming, vintage hotels are still open for business. One of the highlights is the “Gradska Kupaliste” beach, which offers ideal seaside vacation circumstances, especially for families with young children.

The town’s heart, where the various restaurants and konobas pamper visitors with delectable Mediterranean fare, is equally lovely.

Opatija

The Riviera’s magnificent resort town of Opatija has the longest history of Croatian travel.
Due to Opatija’s convenient location, relatively quick access to major European cities rich vegetation, and good weather. Tourism began to take off and developed quickly in the late 19th century. This location, constructed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, is still in tune with nature.
Villas and hotels are surrounded by well-maintained parks, the 12-kilometer-long “Lungomare” lit coastal promenade, stunning beaches, pools, and fountains.

It’s not just the coast that’s lovely!

The Kvarner region also includes the four islands Krk, Cres, Rab, and Lošinj. There are a lot more stunning resorts and beaches there.

Krk Island

Krk Island, the largest and most populated island in the Adriatic Sea, is a very reachable island in the Kvarner region. Each summer, tens of thousands of tourists travel from the mainland near Rijeka to this stunning island over a 1,430-meter-long concrete bridge, reputed to be among the longest in the world. Krk Island, known for many years as the “Golden Island,” is located in the heart of the stunning Kvarner Bay, an area blessed with exceptional natural beauty and various cultural activities. In fact, the island is occasionally referred to as the “cradle of Croatian culture,” a title for which it is understandably extremely proud.

Cres Island

One of the nicest islands in Croatia to visit when in Kvarner Bay is Cres, which is tucked away in the northernmost corner of the Adriatic Sea and is reachable by ferry via Rijeka.

One of Croatia’s major islands, Cres is the ideal location to spend a few days discovering the unique culture and allure of island life.

During the sweltering summer, visit Lake Vrana or one of the numerous sandy beaches that surround the island. It’s quite lovely and a great place to unwind. Oh, and don’t forget to spend some time wandering Cres Town’s cobblestone streets as well. It is quite lovely, especially with the addition of the Municipal Loggia and the Venetian Tower.

Rab Island

In Kvarner Bay, Rab Island is a true jewel. Most notably, this island paradise is well-known for its many silky beaches, which are truly uncommon in Croatia. Rab is a true highlight because to its stunning natural attractions as well, including the lovely Geopark, the impressive mountain scenery with the Kamenjak viewpoint, and the numerous hidden natural bays. Rab Old Town, which experts regard to be one of Croatia’s most significant historical treasures, is one of the most lovely spots to visit on the island.

Only ferries from Stinica to Misnjak or from Krk Island to Lopar may take you to Rab Island. But from the coastal resorts, there are also passenger ferries.

On Rab, the island is home to a number of fantastic resorts. The largest and most populated are Lopar in the north, Banjol and Rab town on the west coast.

A traditional cake with almonds and Maraschino liqueur with a 12-century-old original recipe is called Rabska Torta.

Lošinj Island

Kvarner bay Lošinj

A true hidden gem can be found in north Croatia, just off the coast, on the island of Lošinj. It is referred to as the “island of vitality,” and it is a sensory overload. The air is thick with the aromas of pine, mint, and lavender as well as vivid greens and blues.

This Lošinj is a destination for those looking for ecotourism-focused adventure activities or to unwind in the peace of the remote bays. Despite being one of the less-traveled islands, Lošinj offers a wide variety of activities, from luxury getaways and active vacations to family vacations.

A passenger boat runs from Rijeka to both Cres and Mali Lošinj. Several daily ferry shuttles connect Merag, on Cres Island to Valbiska, on Krk Island. You can then drive down to Lošinj.
