Moscow is grandiose<\/strong>, Moscow is monumental, Moscow is a metropolis unlike any other in the world. I know of no other city like Moscow, which you cannot simply claim to like or dislike. Moscow is simply above that.<\/p>\n

The difference between the time of communism and now is immense,<\/strong><\/p>\n

because the city has been spruced up. The new buildings did not disturb the vista<\/strong> of the historical downtown. They were simply moved to the side so that the business and financial center is now located in the skyscrapers a few kilometres from the center.<\/strong> The development was fast and efficient<\/strong> owing to the inexhaustible oil and gas reserves, and many other mineral resources. Or at least so it seemed. The reserves may still be inexhaustible, but the sanctions and oil crisis have driven the prices down and crippled exports, thus slowing down<\/strong> development<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, this economic situation has resulted in an increased number of foreign tourists, primarily European.<\/strong> Now they can afford to stay in Moscow, which was until recently held to be one of the most expensive cities in the world. The ruble has devalued by some 40% in relation to the Euro.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Good four star hotels<\/strong> can be found in the broader downtown area for as little as EUR 100 per room per night including breakfast, hostels for a lot less than that, and there is also an increasing number of apartments for rent.<\/p>\n

City transport<\/strong> by subway is very cheap and efficient.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Trains arrive at the stations every couple of minutes. It’s useful to be able to at least read Cyrillic script<\/strong> because the majority of signposts are written in it. There are some in English, but you’ll find them only if you look really hard. They are usually on the floor.<\/strong> The stations of the downtown lines resemble museum halls.<\/p>\n

The prices of restaurants are like those in Europe.<\/strong> You\u2019ve got the more expensive ones, and you\u2019ve got the cheaper. The same goes for shopping, and a must-see is Gum<\/strong> \u2013 the most spectacular department store in Europe, although just to go window shopping and taste the Moscow ice cream – a relic from communism.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kremlin<\/strong>, the Red Square<\/strong>, broad avenues, and Stalin’s skyscrapers are not to be wasted words on but rather experienced. It is the grandeur that takes your breath away. The cars, too, of course, because one would think that Mercedes was selling its entire production here, especially the high-end models.<\/p>\n

Moscow is also very well connected with Europe. Aeroflot<\/strong> operates modern aircraft, tickets average at about EUR 250 and the service is decent, so get movin\u2019! Moscow is equally attractive in the winter when it’s snow-clad at -20\u00b0C, as it is in the spring or in the hot summer.<\/p>\n
