Kerala Travel Mart 2026: I Saw a Different Side of Kerala in Kochi<\/h1>\n

After spending time traveling through Kerala, visiting its temples, experiencing Theyyam, exploring its food and seeing Ayurveda at the heart of everyday life, attending Kerala Travel Mart in Kochi gave me another perspective on this fascinating part of India. KTM 2026 is not simply a tourism exhibition. It is a place where you can see how Kerala wants to present itself to the world \u2013 and where you can meet the people actually creating its tourism future.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I arrived in Kochi after traveling through different parts of Kerala, and that made the Kerala Travel Mart experience particularly interesting. By then, I had already seen that Kerala is much more than the image most international travelers have of palm trees, houseboats and quiet backwaters.<\/p>\n

KTM confirmed that the tourism industry here understands this very well.<\/p>\n

The 13th Kerala Travel Mart<\/strong>, held from September 24 to 27, brought tourism professionals together at the Sagara and Samudrika Convention Centres on Willingdon Island. According to Kerala Tourism, the event generated 58,000 B2B meetings<\/strong>, including 45,000 pre-scheduled meetings and another 13,000 meetings during the event. There were 383 seller stalls and 25 government institution stalls.<\/p>\n

More than Ayurveda and backwaters<\/h2>\n

What interested me most was the diversity of Kerala’s tourism offer.<\/p>\n

Ayurveda remains one of the state’s strongest international products, and there is clearly enormous interest in wellness holidays, longer treatments and resorts combining accommodation with traditional therapies.<\/p>\n

But walking through KTM, it was obvious that Kerala is trying to move beyond that familiar image.<\/p>\n

Adventure tourism, responsible tourism, culture, gastronomy, nature, rural experiences and lesser-known destinations are becoming increasingly important.<\/p>\n

And after traveling through Kerala myself, I understand why.<\/p>\n

This is a state where a traveler can move from a modern city such as Kochi to tea plantations in the mountains, tropical beaches, wildlife areas, traditional villages and centuries-old religious traditions within a relatively short journey.<\/p>\n

Kerala’s culture is the real attraction<\/h2>\n

One of my strongest impressions from this trip was the cultural diversity of Kerala.<\/p>\n

I watched Theyyam in northern Kerala, visited temples and experienced a tradition in which the performer becomes, symbolically and ritually, a deity. I also encountered Kerala’s Christian heritage, Islamic traditions and Hindu temples \u2013 often within a surprisingly small geographical area.<\/p>\n

This cultural complexity is something that cannot be reduced to a standard sightseeing itinerary.<\/p>\n

It is also one of the reasons why I believe Kerala has such strong potential for experiential tourism.<\/p>\n

A traveler can come here for Ayurveda and end up discovering something completely different.<\/p>\n

Food is another reason to stay longer<\/h2>\n

The same is true of Kerala’s cuisine.<\/p>\n

Before coming here, I knew the basics: coconut, rice, seafood, curries and plenty of spices. But eating in Kerala is a much broader experience.<\/p>\n

There is vegetarian cuisine, the elaborate Sadya traditionally served on a banana leaf, seafood from the Arabian Sea, Malabar biryani and a wide range of meat dishes.<\/p>\n

Chicken, beef, goat and pork are all part of Kerala’s culinary culture, depending on the region and community.<\/p>\n

For me, food has become one of the clearest examples of how Kerala’s history has been shaped by different cultures and trading connections.<\/p>\n

A destination that wants you to slow down<\/h2>\n

Perhaps the most important thing I took away from KTM is that Kerala is not trying to compete simply by attracting more visitors.<\/p>\n

The state is increasingly promoting longer stays and deeper experiences<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

That makes sense.<\/p>\n

Kerala is not a destination that should be rushed through in three or four days. The more time you spend here, the more layers you discover \u2013 Ayurveda, food, religion, nature, villages, art, history and everyday life.<\/p>\n

The international tourism industry seems to recognize this potential. KTM brought buyers from around the world together with Kerala’s hotels, resorts, tour operators, houseboats, Ayurveda centers and other tourism businesses.<\/p>\n

From Kochi to the world<\/h2>\n

For me, the most interesting part of Kerala Travel Mart was not the size of the exhibition or the number of meetings.<\/p>\n

It was the realization that Kerala already has most of the ingredients of a truly international travel destination<\/strong>. What it is working on now is connecting those ingredients into experiences that appeal to a new generation of travelers.<\/p>\n

After several days in Kerala, I would describe it differently than I might have before this trip.<\/p>\n

Kerala is not simply India’s Ayurveda destination. It is not only the land of backwaters, beaches and coconut palms.<\/p>\n

It is a place where ancient traditions, modern tourism, extraordinary food, wellness, nature and everyday Indian life exist side by side<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

And Kerala Travel Mart in Kochi was probably the best place to see where this destination is heading next.<\/p>\n
