A lot of snow means a white mountain idyll.

Obertauern is in Austria, and it is not only a skiing resort but also one of the snowiest in Europe. From the end of November to the beginning of May, this skiing resort offers the joy of snow. The slopes are excellent for skiers of all types and ages, featuring both steep and gentle slopes as well as intermediate slopes suitable for every preference. Apart from skiing, there is a rich offering of other snow sports.

What to know about this top-notch skiing resort

The skiing trails and cable cars form a closed circuit – Tauernrunde. The slopes are situated at altitudes between 1630 and 2313 meters. The cable cars are modern and fast, with no long waiting times: one gondola, two 8/10 combined cable cars, seventeen chairlifts, and six tow lifts. There are about 100 km of fantastic skiing and 32 km of cross-country skiing trails.

It is possible to complete the entire circuit in both directions. Intermediate and advanced skiers need less than a day of skiing. Most accommodation options are located by a trail or a cable car, making almost the entire Obertauern accessible by ski in, and ski out. Once parked, the car can be forgotten. Most parking around the village is free.

The views are breathtaking

Taverns and restaurants with terraces by the trails are very tempting for enjoying the view of the Alpine peaks. Morning coffee, a break, a gourmet lunch, or just something light. Everyone will find their measure.

Some restaurants, like Kringsalm, my favorite among restaurants, have developed cuisine and a gourmet offer of food and drinks at a high level. The owner, Mrs. Manu, is a perfect host. The well-designed ambiance and excellent service, including many in our language, guarantee enjoyment with every meal.

The Beatles skied the snow in Obertauern while filming the movie “Help.” If they could, then everyone else could. We know there weren’t any special athletes.

Obertauern is known for its après-ski  as one of the most entertaining places in the Alps.

Every day, or every afternoon from three onwards, dancing in ski boots is a favorite form of fitness around the counters of numerous bars.

After apres-ski, everyone, of course, gets very hungry, so it’s time to quickly soak up some good Viennese schnitzel, Kaiserschmarrn, or game goulash, which is a big specialty here.

There is a sunbathing terrace in various locations. It is important to find the right one facing the sun at any time of the day. Obertauern is an ideal skiing resort for families with children. It is not too big, and the cable cars and slopes return to the village. Numerous ski schools for all ages, from preschoolers to adult beginners, professionally and efficiently take care of you or your children. Ski school instructors speak more than 50 languages, including ours.

While children are in school, parents can relax by skiing because they are never far away and easily return to the meeting point or simply enjoy one of the terraces.

Obertauern resembles a cake. A line of skiing, then a line of sunny terraces, then again skiing, then again terraces, then après-ski… like a real Esterhazy cake.

The village is at 1630 meters, which is excellent for staying and recharging the batteries of both the little ones and the big ones.

Your skiing holiday in Obertauern will certainly be a special event thanks to its privileged position, which is not in vain called the “snow bowl.” On the other hand, the diversity of skiing trails will bring a smile to your face while skiing in Obertauern that will not leave your lips even after returning home.
