Obertauern is a charming Austrian ski resort offering exceptional conditions for winter sports.

Popularly known as Ober, Ivica Kostelić, a former Croatian alpine skier and Olympian, attended the presentation of the Obertauern ski resort in Zagreb, which took placeon Saturday, October 14, 2023.
“Besides being a family-friendly ski resort, it’s also a place where you’re guaranteed to have snow. Its location allows us to confidently say that skiing will be possible for months. Additionally, it offers plenty of excellent freeride slopes,” Ivica emphasized.
He will be going on a winter vacation with his wife Erin, a former Icelandic skier, and their four young children. Furthermore, he will be accompanying our women’s alpine skiing team to the World Cup.
Apart from being an exceptional sport, skiing is also a lifestyle.

Mona Maier, the director of the Obertauern Tourist Board, highlighted the importance of being close to nature and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
“I believe we should be as close to nature as possible, as healthy as we can be, so it’s an excellent way of life. Taking time to rest and reconnect with oneself is crucial. If you can combine that with spending more time outdoors, leading your family and friends, it’s the best thing for your spirit and body,” commented Mona.

Obertauern is located 90 kilometers south of Salzburg at an altitude of 1,740 meters, amidst the Hohe Tauern mountains around the Radstädter Tauern Pass. The snowiest ski resort in Austria starts at 1,630 meters and reaches an altitude of 2,313 meters.
Due to its geographical location, Obertauern is fortunate to receive substantial snowfall from the north as well as precipitation from the south. Thanks to its high altitude, Obertauern is Austria’s snowiest winter sports destination. Another unique feature is that the mountains surrounding Obertauern create a bowl shape. This means you can ski in the sun all day long.
The winter season for 2023/24 begins on November 24, 2023, and the end of the season is on May 1, 2024.
Traditionally, the season-opening in Obertauern is celebrated with music and outdoor concerts.
In Obertauern, there are around 150 accommodation options, including hotels, guesthouses, youth hostels, resorts, apartments, private rooms, apartments, and self-catering cabins. Among them, three hotels have a 5-star rating, nine fall into the 4-star S category, 26 hotels are classified as 4-star, and there are 20 hotels and guesthouses with 3-star ratings.
There are 26 ski lifts around the village. You can reach them directly from your accommodations without the need for a car, as Obertauern follows the principle of Ski In & Ski Out. There are approximately 100 kilometers of slopes and plenty of open terrain suitable for everyone, from beginners to experienced skiers.
