The Five Best Places in the UK for Nature Lovers
The summer months stretch out before us, full of possibility and potential. Taking a domestic holiday this summer is more viable than ever, thanks to the warmer weather – which also shows some of the UK’s natural wonders in their best possible light. As a nature lover yourself, you might be wondering where best to travel this year. Here are just a few examples of the UK’s incredible natural pedigree.
The Cairngorms
The Scottish Highlands sprawl across the north of Britain, encompassing a third of Scotland’s total landmass. It is an extremely beautiful place to visit, whether traipsing around lochs or taking in the hostile landscapes of the Outer Hebrides. But if you are looking for a single place in Scotland to which to dedicate your annual visitation, you should look no further than the Cairngorms. This is a slice of the eastern Highlands, just south of Inverness, that boasts some of the most incredible walking trails in the whole of the UK.
The views will be quite enough for the average nature lover, but the Cairngorms National Park does not stop giving there. It is a rich site for wildlife, with nine nature reserves in total – protecting native species of golden eagle and wildcat, amongst a great many more.
Point of Ayr
From one northern extreme to another, the next on our list is Point of Ayr – the northernmost point of Wales, found on the tip of the Dee Estuary and within eyeshot of Liverpool. Point of Ayr is defined by its lighthouse, but is also home to stunning wildlife in the form of brent geese and ringed plovers.
The entire northern coast of Wales is incredible to visit, from the unmistakable pebble beaches of Llandudno to the quintessential fish-and-chips-and-blustery-weather experience of Colwyn Bay. This is to say nothing of the natural wonders to be found in the greater north of Wales. To really, truly experience it, you’ll want to come back time and time again. Thankfully, there are lodges for sale in North Wales that make it so much easier to turn the northern coast into your second home.
Seven Sisters
The Seven Sisters can be found in coastal Sussex, and simply have to be seen in person to be appreciated in full. The ‘sisters’ in question are the peaks and troughs in a chalk cliff formation, situated in the South Downs. The landscape here is quite simply iconic, and edificial to boot. As well as the imposing effects of sea erosion, visitors can find a diverse array of wildlife from beautiful butterflies to rare birds.
Cheddar Gorge
Finally, we come to Cheddar Gorge in Somerset. Another southern English destination, Cheddar Gorge is one of the UK’s most impressive natural formations – and a historical gold mine, too. Cheddar Gorge is a deep, tight limestone valley and cave system formed by ancient floods and underground water systems. As well as being one of the most engaging places to explore on foot, it is also something of a mecca for outdoor climbing enthusiasts!
