Why is Obertauern an ideal place for a winter holiday? Snow. Plenty of snow. In fact, no ski resort in Austria or around has more snow then Obertauern. The slopes are great for all ages or skier experience. Steep, not so steep, or just as you prefer that day.
The slopes together are connected in a circle so it’s easy to go around, following beautiful views and very tempting sun terraces and restaurants along the way. Most of the parking is free but considering the ski areas being so spread out around the village, there is no need for a car.
Even The Beatles stepped on skis in Obertauern shooting the movie “Help”
Après ski fun is guaranteed. Every afternoon from 3pm, hopping in ski boots is a favorite form of fitness in many bars and people do get hungry afterwards. Local cuisine is here for that, offering many Austrian specialties such as Kaiserschmarrn, Germknodel (yeast dumplings) or Venison stew and Wienerschnitzel as a main dish.
It’s fun to ski in Obertauern. Kind of like an Esterhazy cake, multi-layered with skiing, sunbathing, skiing, sunbathing again and après ski at the end.
It’s obvious why higher altitude sport preparations are so popular among professional athletes. The village is at 1630m which is great for recharging, even for the small ones.
Perfect for families, with an extremely rich selection of hotels and apartments of all categories with ski schools that employ teachers speaking more than 50 languages, including our Croatian.
Obertauern really is the place for an ideal winter holiday.
