CAP-FERRET – RÉSERVE NATURELLE
The Cap-Ferret, and the Bassin d’Arcachon, is just an hour away drive from the city center of Bordeaux. The nature reserve offer plenty to discover, including wide white sand beaches on the oceanside, and authentic villages of oyster farmers on the bassin side….
THE BASSIN SIDE: FROM THE OYSTERS FARM TO YOUR TABLE
The Bassin d’Arcachon is a must for any foodie visiting the Bordeaux region. With more than 300 oyster farmers, the area represents 10% of oysters production in France.
It is possible to sample oysters all year round in the area, if the weather allow of course. Quality and textures of oysters vary with the seasons, with leaner ones in winter (my personal favorite) and richer in summer. As for every person leaving in Bordeaux, it is often on the spur of the moment that we headed to Cap-Ferret for some oysters on a beautiful spring day.
On your way there, you can notice the succession of small villages – oyster farmers village – which are very characteristic of the place. It is possible to stop there, or go further, like we did, to the end of the “pointe” for our tasting lunch.
One thing not to forget on the way is to pick-up your dessert in a classic place, Chez Pascal. Its pastries, the “Dunes Blanches” are now a classic in the region. The small cream puffs are so light, you will surely want more than one! While the traditional taste is vanilla, it comes in many different tastes (salty caramel is worth a try, but the classic remains my favorite).
The oysters farms serving tasting lunch have restrictions when it comes to what they can serve. It includes generally seafood (oysters, shellfish and shrimps – and wine of course). A few alternative to seafood is serve, but if you have specific dietary constraints, we advise you to let us know ahead. That’s also why we bring with us our dessert!
One of the alternative experience to discover the Bassin in a unique way is to by private boat. Rent the boat for a day, or haf day, and discover the best of bassin under another angle. Taste the local products and wines in a unique setting, with a view on the Dune du Pyla, on the boat or maybe on one of the unique sandbank of the bassin.
OCEANSIDE: NATURE AND ACTIVE HOLIDAYS…
The Cap-Ferret benefits from an ideal location, with the Bassin d’Arcachon on one side, and the Atlantic Ocean on the other side. It makes it a great spot for foodies who love to stay active. It is a great spot for surfing, but also an ideal environment off season for relaxing retreats, or a simple walk on the long whitesand beaches,
