How it all began
The area of present-day Los Angeles was inhabited by various Native American tribes: Tongva, Chumash, and Tataviam, who lived in harmony with nature and utilized the wealth of resources provided by the environment.

Its full name was “El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula,” which translates to “The Town of Our Lady, the Queen of Angels of the Porciúncula River.” This long name was shortened to “Los Angeles,” and the river is also now called the Los Angeles River.
